Where it comes from

Starflower or Borago officinalis as its also known, is an annual herb native to the Mediterranean. It however can also be found growing in gardens around the UK. The oil goes by two names Starflower Oil or Borage Oil. It is derived from the seeds of the plant.

Why you should take it

The Starflower oil provides high levels of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) - It has the highest level of GLA found in any seed oil. GLA is an omega 6 fatty acid which has strong anti-inflammatory properties, our bodies can’t make it on their own so we must get it through diet or supplements. All though it is only found in very small amounts in certain foods. Starflower oil is not as well know as Evening Primrose Oil but has twice the amount of GLA.

What are the benefits of Starflower Oil

Starflower oil is used to help with PMS symptoms (breast tenderness, skin breakouts). Studies show that GLA can help balance hormone levels by regulating the production of prostaglandins which are messengers involved in the body’s inflammatory process.

What dosage should you take?

For healthy adults take one 1000mg capsule a day which contains 200mg of GLA. Or a higher dose if advised by your Doctor. Studies have shown improvement in joint pain after taking consistently for 6weeks. It is not advisable to use for prolonged periods of time.

When should you not take it?

If you suffer from bleeding disorders or liver problems speak it is not advisable to take. Also not advisable to take when pregnant as the risks are unknown.
